Finding a home
Your local council is obliged to consider you for permanent housing if you qualify to join their housing register. The council's Housing Advice Service will advise you on whether you're eligible to join the register. Their ability to offer you housing or refer you to us for housing depends upon the level of priority you have on this register and whether the type of home you need is readily available.
If you're homeless, or likely to be made homeless, the council must help or advise you. How much help they can give depends on your situation. They will check:
- That you actually are, or soon will be, homeless
- Whether you fall into one of the priority needs groups, for example, if you have children or are pregnant or elderly, suffering from mental illness or have a learning or physical disability or are vulnerable for some other reason.
If you fall into one of these groups you may qualify for temporary accommodation provided by the council.
Your council's Housing Advice Centre should also be able to advise you on other ways of finding a home. These may include:
- Hostels
- Flat agencies, local notice boards or newspapers to find private rented accommodation
- Short-life housing co-ops
- Tenant management co-ops
- Availability of rent deposit schemes
Housing Advice Centres may also be able to advise you on how to prevent the loss of your current home and help you with other housing-related issues such as your housing rights, harassment, Housing Benefit, rent arrears or mortgage problems.
Some centres can offer housing advice in different languages. If your first language isn't English, ask if they have a worker who can talk to you in your own language.
